Q:Ello Ello! Just curious, what would be Hiccups, for example, role be as chief? Thank you kindly! :)
One of my collegues said something interesting the other day. I really liked it. She said, “A Viking chief was only a husband during the winter and after dark.” That’s true of the real world. That’s true of Berk’s world. They may not be real Vikings, but don’t think for one second that Astrid was joking when she said:
Well…It’s a lot of responsibility. The map will have to wait, for sure, and I’ll need to fly Toothless since you’ll be too busy…
That’s a big clue as to what his life is going to look like. Hiccup’s going to be busy. Almost too busy. He’ll be too busy for Toothless. And just in case you’re not quite convinced that he’s incredibly busy all the time, let’s look at his daily living.
This is just makes my respect for Stoick even stronger.
Cause imagine having to do all of that and then deal with a baby at home, especially after Valka was taken.
I’m assuming he would have had help during the day when Hiccup was a baby, but would his son have been his responsibility once he was done chief-ing for the day?
Q:I'm back! *has biggest amount of stuff ever* this includes medicine bandages meat pie(lots of that) herbs fish potatoes... And lots more! What's going on?
YAAAAAY SO GLAD YOU ARE BACK!
I am going to direct you to the Chronicles page of the battleofthegroundeddungeon main blog. That should have a summary with links of what has occurred, though I still need to update Day 13 a little (which was yesterday)… and I’ll go do that update right now for you.
Another sad Stoick post: If the thing didn’t happen, Valka would have gone home with Stoick and everyone and then Stoick would have retired and would have been able to spend the rest of his life with Valka again….
And Stoick would have seen Hiccup and Astrid marry, so that Astrid was no longer his “future daughter-in-law” but his actual canon daughter-in-law. And he would have seen his grandchildren and…

“However small we are, we should always fight for what we believe to be right. And I don’t mean fight with the power of our fists or the power of our swords…I mean the power of our brains and our thoughts and our dreams.
"And as small and quiet and unimportant as our fighting may look, perhaps we might all work together…and break out of the prisons of our own making. Perhaps we might be able to keep this fierce and beautiful world of ours as free for all of us as it seemed to be on that blue afternoon of my childhood.”

Shield significant in HTTYD?
I recently replaced my original DVD copy of HTTYD with the re-release Blu-ray edition. I was enjoying watching it again in a better format and on a much more improved television (upgraded from a 720 32 inch LCD screen to a 1080 50 inch LCD screen) and Blu-ray player. I was paying attention to the details in each scene, marveling at them, and I noticed something about the shields.
Now in Viking culture shields were highly valued and were painted with depictions of epic battles and legends to bring luck and glory into battle. Many Vikings used their shields to also tell of their own personal triumphs. In HTTYD Gobber talks about shields as well. He states that a shield is the best weapon and if you have to chose between a shield and a sword always chose the shield. The teens are seen exclusively training with shields in an exercise. I believe it is safe to assume that shields in the HTTYD movie universe are just as valued as in actual Viking culture.
Now we see many shields in HTTYD. Vikings are holding them, using them, and they are in the background of many interior shots as decor or being stored on the walls. Some of the shields we see Hiccup using have even been carried over into merchandise as well.
For example, this is the shield Hiccup first uses in training.
He is also animated with it in the DVD menu of the film.
This shield appears to be the most recognized and has transferred into various forms of merchandise and cosplay.
-I believe this was made by KellywoeshxD at deviantART.
-Via SweetPandaFish at Etsy.com
Of course Hiccup’s other most popular shield does not actually appear in either films. This would be the shield Hiccup forges from Gronkle Iron in the series Dragons: Riders of Berk. This is my personal favorite because it is a early example of Hiccup’s ability to craft complicated inter changeable parts and, to be frank, its just super awesome.
-Before being modified with Gronkle iron.
This shield has also been made into merchandise and released as part of the marketing campaign for HTTYD 2.
But the shield I want to talk about the most is this one.
This shield is very important in my opinion. I believe it is a depiction of Stoick. It is clearly a large red haired Viking with a open mouth who appears to be breathing out smoke. This shield is hung on the Haddock households wall in two places! There are three shields on the wall at the base of the stairs to Hiccup’s loft. The first is this shield, the second is a light blue and whitish colored design (which is the same as the shield Hiccup takes to the cove later in the film) with a pair of crossed spears hung on it, and then it is the same shield with Stoick’s possible likeness. I chose to not believe this is an unplanned event by the animators. We see such attention to detail in every single scene, it seems unlikely they would allow duplicates of shields on a more key wall. This is why I believe this shield design is significant to Stoick and the Haddock household.
-Same design as whats on the Haddock’s wall.
I also believe I saw the Stoick shield hung in the great hall at some point during the two seasons of the television show. But I do not have any screenshots to prove it. (I didn’t want to re-watch all the episodes to find it, sorry)
-A extra little screenshot of Hiccup being adorable in his helmet for his Dad to make up for it. This is during the test to see who wins the right to kill the Monstrous Nightmare between him and Astrid. Also the first time Hiccup wears his new helmet on screen.
When Stoick finds out that Hiccup is succeeding and excelling in training he gives him a very special gift, a helmet. This helmet is crafted from Hiccup’s mothers breast plate, a match to his father’s own helmet, and he is told it represents her and kept her close. Stoick meant this gift to state that Hiccup was a Viking, one of them, and part of his people and culture.
When Hiccup enters the arena at the end of dragon training he picks up a shield that has been left out. The shield he chooses appears to have a very similar, if not identical, design and is a equally striking remembrance to Stoick as well.
-screenshot cropped and rotated by me.
This is the shield Hiccup drops to the side with the knife at the beginning to his demonstration.
In a sense he is denouncing not only his village’s belief system but his father’s own likeness.
He then takes off and discards the helmet Stoick had recently given him. Hiccup discards all these significant objects and then vocally denounces his heritage.
"I am not one of them."
This has so much symbolism!
So, that is just something I noticed and thought about the shields.
forever confused at people who believe with all their soul that hiccup has muscles
He has muscles, they’re just not the bulgy Eret-kind. He’s wiry.
he’s skin and bones. and i don’t understand where the idea that he has muscles comes from. that he rides a dragon? i’ve done horse-riding, and while my legs were more firm, i definitely didn’t have muscles.
I would imagine moreof that the muscle concept comes from his many years working in the forge, a job which typically requires some level of physical strength. It’s a physically demanding position, working metal, which would suggest Hiccup probably has a little bit more strength than his walking stick appearance suggests.
the last set of ideas i am fucking crying haddock SECRETLY WISH HIM OVERTHROWN? LOVED ONE IN A REBEL GROUP? TO BE SENT TO HEL? FRENZY? MORE LIKE HEARTACHE AND CHAOS? /keyboardsmashes
* laughs * I know… I’m only encouraging more pain and pandemonium, aren’t I?
But we tried. Multiple times. Just to have a happy day where the most exciting thing was Dragon Racing. Is that how it ever works out? NOOOOOO. We like to be miserable.
Q:I'm sort of tempted to join the botgd but I have no idea what kind of character would I be or anything. I just think I'd be really awkward. By the way, I used to be crazypplz
It’d be great fun if you joined, friend!
You could always start with a “generic character” if you can’t decide what your character would be like. Then you could just act by an “awkward personality” and make up details later. Characters tend to create themselves as they interact with other characters.
Or, if you want, I could give you some nascent brainstorming ideas, like:
- Are you a dragon rider? How good are you at riding a dragon? What species is your dragon, and what is your relationship with your dragon?
- What is your job? Are you a generic soldier? Blacksmith? Leather worker? Tailor? Dragon-fighting Viking? Bread making Viking? Small home repair Viking? Weapons specialist? Spy? Scout? Fletcher? Burglar? Dragon trainer? Fisherman? Pirate? And how good are you at said job?
- What are your motivations for joining the Battle of the Grounded Dungeon? Do you support King Haddock, secretly wish him overthrown, have connections with the Warden, have friends and a loved one in the rebel group, or are you just got caught up in the frenzy and want to run?
Feel free to join even if you don’t have your character’s details sorted out. I certainly have been developing my character as I’ve been doing on. For instance, I didn’t realize Haddock was married and had two kids until an anonymous person randomly asked me if Haddock’s son would succeed him as king, and suddenly I splurted out an answer about the boy being too young and doing nothing responsible except trying to protect his infant sister.
That said I still don’t think most people know Haddock has a family man side to him because I don’t really roleplay it at all.
But anyway love your interest!!! :)
